About The Artist

Richard Altman is originally from South Bend, Indiana, and completed his undergraduate studies at Indiana University with a Biology major/ Psychology minor. For two years after graduating, he taught high school biology in Cincinnati. He moved to attend Arizona State University for graduate studies receiving a Masters Degree in Educational Technology. After graduating he worked for two years producing multimedia productions for Arizona State University while also acquiring a second Masters Degree, an MFA in Photography from ASU. Richard then moved on to direct the Media Resource Center at the ASU College of Architecture and teach classes in Presentation Design.

An intense interest in technology led Richard to leave the university and form Communication Design, a firm dedicated to the design and production of interactive multimedia productions. Communication Design provided consulting and design services to educational institutions, government, and businesses for twenty-three years developing an impressive list of clients that include the Phoenix SUNS, Phoenix Art Museum, Heard Museum, Tempe Fine Arts Center, The Phoenix Zoo, Phoenix Newspapers, Educational Management Group, Sinclair Oil, The Phoenician Resort, Central Arizona Project, Salt River Project and ASML Technology.

During this period, Richard also began exploring the fine art side of mixed media and started creating fine art sculptures combining steel, fused glass, wood, and stone. His new interest and dedication is creating fine art glass sculpture. He thus sold Communication Design and founded Fusion Studios. This new adventure provides a platform for Richard and his associates to deliver unique contemporary fine and functional art objects. The studio has completed art commissions for Phoenix Children’s Hospital, Lucent Technologies, Avaya Communications, Maxtor Technologies, Princess Cruise Lines and Renown Hospital. His Commission for Princess Cruise Lines received national recognition. Glass Art Magazine interviewed and featured Altman's Princess project on their 2004 July/August issue. The interview focused on the design and fabrication of glass art objects for the Santa Fe themed restaurants located on two new Princess Cruise ships, the Diamond Princess and the Sapphire Princess. Images of the project appeared on the cover of the magazine. The Renown Hospital atrium project was covered in an article in the April/May 2008 issue of the same magazine.
