Glass Art Sculptures for Tables and Niche
|
Creating free standing art glass sculptures requires a similar approach to the creation of wall sculptures. The obvious difference is the requirement for the artwork to be freestanding. So in the early stages of conceptualization and design of the art glass, attention is also focused on how the sculpture will be supported. Creating a design without regard for the support system may lead to a very nice piece of glass that is very difficult to support for display. Freestanding sculptures are supported with a simple but complimentary stand that surrounds, and enhances the radiance of the art glass.
Occasionally I'll use an "off the shelf " stand, but most of the time I will come up with a design that I can use for a series of work. For me, the free standing pieces are well suited for series work. The support requirements and overall form factor for the glass component is established and becomes a point of departure for the designs. There could also be an existing design or color palate that becomes a point of departure for the series.
The work pictured on the site reflects a variety of materials and techniques, but all of them have been created to energize a design with the special qualities of transparency and reflectivity inherent in the glass art material.
